Description
Alvin Ailey’s ballet “Revelations”.
I am a former ballerina and am drawn to ballets showing strong emotions. My figurative abstract painting is of the early scene in the Revelations ballet. The dance is about trying to get up out of the ground. Using expressive hand and body movements influenced by African culture.
The biblical significance of Revelation lies in the author's conviction that right will ultimately triumph over evil.
Alvin Ailey used African-American spirituals, song-sermons, gospel songs and holy blues, Alvin Ailey's Revelations fervently explores the places of deepest grief and holiest joy in the soul. More than just a popular dance work, it has become a cultural treasure, beloved by generations of fans. Ailey's choreographic masterpiece Revelations is recognized as one of the most popular and most performed ballets in the world. In this work he blended primitive, modern and jazz elements of dance with a concern for Black rural America.
