Bucolic Lake Afton located in Yardley’s Pa. has been inspiring artists and photographers for years with its picturesque views of the Old Library and its constantly changing landscape. For years, visitors and residents have fished from the shoreline and skated on its icy surface during cold winter days. Lake Afton was named after the poem “Afton Water,” which was written by Robert Burns in 1791. It is a manmade Lake that was created to provide power via water wheel electricity for a gristmill that John Brock built in 1705. In the 1870's the citizens of Yardleyville erected a library building on land donated by the heirs of William Yardley who settled in the area in 1682 on land purchased from William Penn. The Yardleyville Library was completed in 1878. The building's style, known as "carpenter" Gothic, features a steep gable roof, decorative slate work, and pointed arched windows. The design was possibly copied from an old volume of poetry.
